Here are some facts, for anyone who would like more info:
1. Summary of the principal costs of the EU, (from the
Bruges Group in 2008):
By 2010 The UK will have made total contributions to the EU of £315.4 Billion
gross, the EU has funded UK projects for £214 Billion, the direct shortfall
is: £101,400,000,000 pounds! (A billion is one thousand million!)
By 2007, the total UK trade deficit with the EU was £384 Billion.
The EU Parliament has just voted to increase our subscription from £45 Million
to
£50 Million per day. Thank EU.
The Common Agricultural Policy costs the UK £16.8 billion per year.
The Common Fisheries Policy costs the UK £3.3 billion per year.
Over regulation of British Business costs £28 billion per year.
Plus 365 days x £50,000,000 per day gives £66 Billion per year total cost
to the UK.
Their estimate of the cost is £1050 per person per year, or more than £2100
for every tax payer.
2. The Tax Payers’ Alliance calculates less conservatively
that the real cost to us is £2000 per person per year, including children,
when counting the cost to UK business from EU interference and regulation
and higher food prices. The Commission tells us that the figure is only
£3.8 billion (only!) and, whatever anyone says, they stick by this narrow
direct payment.
3. The EU Budget is to go up by some 10% in 2009/2010. But this budget is
in Euros, which now cost us 29% more than last year.
4. The European Finance Directives are aimed at cutting the City of London
down to size.
However much we like to vilify bankers and their kind, the City of London
is the Financial Centre of the World and is the one bright star which makes
up for our deficits in almost every other sphere (not counting REIDsteel
of Christchurch, which has just won its 4th Queen’s Award for Export).
But the big boys of Europe, Germany and France, want to handicap the City
to bring it down to the level of Frankfurt or Paris. Imagine this: Hedge
funds are to be controlled by ESMA in Paris, even though London has the
lion’s share of the whole EU market.
5. Brown, and others, tell us that millions of British jobs depend on our
EU membership.
Rubbish. We have a huge trade deficit with the EU
and the EU needs to trade with us much more than we need them.
Norway and Switzerland, the 2 richest nations in Europe (the 2 that are
not in the EU, of course) export more per head to the EU than we do. Even
Mexico has a free trade agreement with the EU.
This is all we were voting for when we voted to join the EEC; we never voted
to give up our country to be part of the EU super-state, a nation of regions
and cities, did we?
