How the E.U. affects Ferndown  & West Parley

The Waste Plants.  Dorset County Council is planning to build Waste Plants at Blunts farm, Ferndown and at Bournemouth Airport – one either side of Ferndown, 3 miles apart.

These new design hi tech MBT/RDF plants will take household waste from Bournemouth and all over Dorset, treat it biologically, turn some into fuel, and burn it. Are they safe? We don’t really know. The designs are still evolving. We do know they can emit strong odours and carcinogens.

Our 2 plants (out of 12 forecast for England by 2010) will make Ferndown the MBT Capital of England. Why is this being forced on to us?

Because the E.U. has made a directive that waste going into our landfills must reduce by 50%.  Dorset County Council jumped to obey it, without careful study of the costs or dangers. In fact, recent local studies show that the plants are not needed here – we can make enough progress just by increasing our recycling, which is more 'green' anyway.

Housing and Traffic.  No less than 900 houses are being planned for the Green Belt field on New Road just South of Parley Cross. This will nearly double the population of West Parley from 3500 to some 7000. Without major road improvements, for which there may not be enough money, think what this will do to the already overloaded roads in the Ferndown area. Imagine New Road, already at a standstill at rush hours, trying to take another 10 cars a minute.

Why is this being forced on to us?  Because the South West Regional Assembly – unelected, unaccountable to the voters, and set up by the Government to meet E.U. requirements – has decided that this is part of their Grand Plan for the South West.
